Morris Lauwereins Obituary (1923

Morris Arthur Lauwereins, 92, died Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the Evergreen Hospice Center in Kirkland, Washington as a result of Lymphoma. Born in Ogdensburg, New York on December 11, 1923, the son of Arthur and Eliza Lauwereins, Morey (as he was affectionately known) spent most of his childhood in Rochester and LeRoy, New York. He grew up during the depression and helped supplement his family's income with a paper route and many other odd jobs. Morey was inducted into the United States Army in January 1943 and served in the 84th Division (known as the Railsplitters). He received two purple hearts including one for a severe injury during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. When he was honorably discharged in January 1946, he had reached the rank of First Sergeant. After serving in the Army, Morey married his longtime sweetheart Florence Elizabeth "Betty" Cushing in September 1946. He then attended college at Niagara University for two years followed by Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1950. Morey's career spanned four decades with over thirty years at Material Service Corporation in Chicago, Illinois leading up to a position as Vice President of Operations. His career then culminated with a position of President of El Paso Sand and Gravel in El Paso, Texas. He served many years on the National Ready Mix Association and was elected as Chairman in 1978, which led him to be an honorary member of the Board. Morey split his retirement years between Wheaton, Illinois and El Paso, Texas where he enjoyed golfing, hiking, traveling with Betty to various parts of the world, visiting with family, investing, business consulting, and watching sunrises and sunsets. Morey was a devout Catholic and dedicated his life to his family and work. He leaves his wife of 69 years, Betty; his children, Patricia Turkot (Alan), Daniel Lauwereins (Judy), Jane Griffith (David), Richard Lauwereins (Mary), and Lynn Holstein (Fredrick); along with ten grandchildren, Jennifer, Jonathan, Tracy, Amy, Nathan, Tyler, Courtney, Alyson, Ashley, and Chelsea; three great grandchildren, Baron, Michael, and Harper (plus two on the way); his sister Germaine Bostwick and her family; and many other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 19th at 11:00 AM at Edline-Yahn & Covington Funeral Home in Kent, Washington and will be preceded by a viewing beginning at 9:30 AM. The graveside service will begin at 12:30 PM at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.
