Evelyn Cook

–

Kent, Washington

Evelyn Marguerette Cook, a long-time resident of Normandy Park, passed away March 16th in her home with both daughters at her side.
Evelyn was born October 30th, 1915 in Kent, WA to parents Asa and Caroline LeSuer; nearly 100 years ago. Back when SODO still belonged to the mouth of the Duwamish, Kaiser Wilhelm was Public Enemy Number 1, and the horse and buggy was still the primary mode of transportation for most people.
Evelyn spent the majority of her childhood in rural Kent. As a girl, she would ride the Interurban Railroad into Seattle to sell produce at the market with her uncle. At the age of 16, while spending her summer on the Des Moines beach, Evelyn met Don Cook, an ROTC cadet studying at the University of Washington. Don won over Evelyn with his renowned dancing talent and eventually married Kent's Lettuce Festival Princess on April 1, 1938. They would go on to have four children; Beth, Richard, Theirrie, and Don. While Don fought overseas during World War II and the Korean War, Evelyn faced the daunting task of maintaining the family property and raising their children on her own. Despite the odds, she persevered and the Cook household prospered under her matriarchy. Evelyn remained married to Don for 50 years until he died in 1989.
Evelyn thoroughly enjoyed gardening, traveling, dining out, and attending her grandchildren's sporting events. She was a proud member of the Solveig Unit of the Daughters of Norway and would travel around the Puget Sound region performing with the folk dance troop. Anyone who knew Evelyn can attest that there was absolutely nothing in this world that was more important to her than her family and close friends. This was especially apparent during the days before her passing. She will be greatly missed and there is no doubt she'll continue to watch over her family as she had done all these years from her little home overlooking the Cook family property.
Evelyn is survived by her four children, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
