Charles Edward McFarland Jr., 89, of Auburn, WA passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma, WA. Graveside services will be held at 12:30pm -1:30pm on March 1, 2024, at Tahoma National Cemetery 18600 SE 240th St, Kent WA 98042.
Charles (aka Chuck, Hap) was born on December 9, 1934, in Wenatchee WA to Charles McFarland Sr. and Maude Brennan McFarland.
Charles (aka Chuck, Hap) grew up in Dayton, WA. He graduated from Dayton High School in Dayton, WA in 1953.
Joined the Army, serving from March 1954 to March 1956, the last 10 months in Germany. This started his love of travel.
He and Barbara Kregger were married in April 1955.
He attended Kinman Business University in Spokane, WA before going to Gonzaga University 1957-59. He then transferred to WSU in Pullman WA, graduating in 1963 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
Upon graduation he moved to Sacramento, working 2 years for Aerojet General. In 1965 he moved to Hartford, CT working for Pratt-Whitney. In 1967 he moved to Seattle, WA for Boeing. Then Heath Techna where he was sent to CA for a year, mostly in San Diego.
His last chapter of his work career was working for the United States Navy as a Supervisor of Ship Building, until retirement in 1996.
He became an excellent photographer and wood carver. Many of his wood carvings are enjoyed by loved ones & friends today. He loved to golf and ski. Teaching his daughter, Kelly to ski and bike at an early age. She still enjoys these activities today. Family vacations were a priority, traveling to all 50 states.
Charles (aka Chuck, Hap) is survived by his wife Barbara of Auburn, WA; his daughter Kelly Maggs and son in law Todd Maggs of Maple Valley.
He was preceded by death of his parents Maude & Ed McFarland and 2 brothers.
Charles battled Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. We all hope cures can be found in the future.
